"Arm is the Switzerland of tech. If you own the bridge, everyone has to cross. The regulators understood that better than we did." In September 2020, Nvidia agreed to acquire Arm from SoftBank for $40 billion in cash and stock. Arm's instruction set is licensed to nearly every smartphone and, increasingly, every data center chip on Earth. Owning it would have transformed Nvidia from a GPU maker into the toll collector of the semiconductor industry. The deal collapsed in February 2022 after regulators on three continents moved to block it.
